Cricket at Herriard

Whilst it is known that cricket was played in the Parish some considerable time before the turn of the twentieth century, the exact date has been almost impossible to determine. The earliest record to survive relates to the balance sheet for the 1890 season which showed a balance of £2.5s.5d. having been brought forward from the 1889 season. With an annual subscription of only one shillings (5 new pence) expenditure was of necessity modest with one shilling being paid annually for mowing the outfield. The pitch, at that time, being situated in the meadow between Parsonage Cottages and the wood yard.

Extracts from the records.

****In the summer of 1898, practice nights were Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

****In 1900.A bat was purchased for 14s.6d, 3 balls for 15s.0d, leg guards for 9s.6d, and gloves for 4s.6d.

****By 1902, a groundsman was appointed at a cost often shillings for the season.

****In 1903, the team entered the Kempshott Park League thereby incurring costs, for 9 league matches, of 5s.0d being the entrance fee as well as 1s.1d. railway fare and 1s.0d. for "putting up at 2 matches".What this last item referred to is left to conjecture.

****At a meeting in March, 1940, it was agreed to keep the club active, in spite of the war, and to play as many games as possible.Owing to the difficulties in getting players from thevillage alone, it was agreed to let anyone join the club.A situation that is all too necessary for today's team!

****The cricket eleven entered the Basingstoke Evening League in the 1980's

1994 saw the team play in the final of the Guy Jewell plate knock out competition, losing to Basing in a high scoring match.

****The cricket team also entered the North Hampshire indoor league, and for many years (and quite possibly still) one of the team, Richard Cieslik, with one other, held the individual bowling achievement. In the 1992/3 season, he took five wickets, in a six a side match, for just 13 runs in his spell of 3 overs.
